East Europe' s plain bottled water market grew by 14.7% in 2006 to reach 11,932
million litres and a market value of Euros 4,473 million. Water for coolers
now represent 10% of the total volume, with the region' s installed base of
units generating 1.2 billion litres of bulk water in the year.
The East European bottled water market has made considerable gains since 2001,
growing by 70.8% in absolute volume terms. This represents compound annual
growth of 11.3% over the 2001 to 2006 period. Average bottled water
consumption per person has reached 37.8 litres - almost twice the level
reported in 2001.
Many East European countries have evolved well-established traditions for
drinking water, due to an availability of mineral and curative sparkling
waters. A rising awareness of bottled water' s health benefits through
‘hydration-on-go’, alongside poor tap water quality in certain
markets, have ensured that the bottled water industry continues to build scale.
International players continue to make the market more competitive. The top
four bottled water multinationals - Coca-Cola, Danone, Nestlé and
PepsiCo - are building their stake in East European bottled water. Meanwhile,
accession to the EU opens up many opportunities and local operators are
spreading their influence across Europe.
Indeed, a number of local players have steadily built scale in recent years -
presenting a challenge to the international bottled water groups. Example
local players include: Karlovarske MV of the Czech Republic, IDS Group
(Ukraine), Romaqua Group (Romania), Jamnica (Croatia), Knjaz Milos (Serbia),
European Drinks (Romania) and Ustronianka (Poland).
Zenith International reports offer you the most reliable market figures and
in-depth analysis of trends. This comes from a bottom up approach to the
research process, and detailed discussions undertaken with industry players.
