Abstract
MEMS gyroscope industry plans a high growth potential of the defence and low end automotive applications. The MEMS gyroscope market is expected to generate in the range of 800M$ value in 2010. During the mean time several challenges are identified:
- Increasing number of gyroscope players
- Changes in the value chain due to patents and supply issues
In this context, Yole Development has edited a new report describing the current structure of the MEMS gyroscope industry, the applicative markets, the main business models, the main challenges and its potential evolutions...
The report is including unique features:
- Description of each application with market estimates and market shares (when available)
- Analysis of the competition
- Analysis of the four major business trends
- Analysis of gyroscope technologies
- Analysis of technologies substitution risk
The 4 major business trends
Yole Development has identified four major trends and challenges that would be detailed in this report:
- MEMS manufacturers are more and more willing to supply a module instead of a component. Interests for IMUs have been identified in all fields of applications. Developments are in progress at Invensense (USA) for example.
- MEMS manufacturers are willing to enter volume applications (e.g. Honeywell when in 2005 it extended its gyroscope product range to the automotive field)
- Business models will adapt according to the supplying strategy of car manufacturers: first signs already occurred in the USA and Japan
- Patent challenges can play a important role to enter a market, particularly in consumer and automotive applications
More than 13 players are today producing MEMS gyroscopes. The 15 others are at development stage, but a large part of them forecast to enter markets soon. 2005 saw the product launch of Honeywell's (USA) automotive gyro, Switech (CH) and Bosch (D) new components too. The interest of gyro manufacturers in the automotive field is clear. In the coming years, 4 other product introductions will occurred: Freescale, Melexis...
Three fields with high growth potential
Over the scope of gyroscope uses, it is expected that:
- Automotive applications (highest new entrant rate)
- Defence & aeronautics applications (stable business)
- Consumer applications (booming markets thanks to sensor introduction in personal electronics). Specific video game programs like Nintendo Revolution or Sony Playstation 3 are likely to account for tenth of millions gyroscopes shipments as well. But will MEMS meet the tech/price specifications?
- Emerging gyroscopes applications are today discussed in medical and robotic field
Automotive
MEMS gyroscopes are included in three automotive applications: Anti rollover systems, GPS navigation and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Beside the hard competition due to new entrants, the key question is to assess the MEMS gyroscope volume market by 2010. Will we see a 100% equipment rate of the ESC in some geographical area? Qualification time of new entrant is an additional issue that would delay the competition of 15 potential manufacturers. But competition between existing players will increase with the known end of the exclusive supply agreement of Continental (D) and BEI Technologies (USA)...
Defence
The average price of a MEMS gyro in defence application is between 4 to 5 time higher than in automotive applications, and more that 15 time the ASP of consumer applications. Defence and aeronautic applications include missiles guidance, general aviation instruments, platform stabilization, land navigation and smart munitions in the future. From the 3 existing players in place today, 8 others have been identified to be in product development phase, including HGS IMIT (D), THALES (FR)...
Consumer
Five consumer applications integrate MEMS gyroscopes: camcorder stabilization, camera stabilization, cell phone stabilization, video games, and navigation for small electronics. The challenge today is to understand if silicon based devices would compete with the established ceramic based gyroscopes.
Technology evolution
Several materials are competing for gyro manufacturing:
- Quartz
- Ceramic
- Silicon & SOI
Depending on applications, specs and price, it induces a design & material choice. One of the key market players, Panasonic (JP) has shift from quartz to silicon based gyroscope, showing that this technology choice will be more and more segmented by applications. Moreover a potential threat for the development of MEMS gyroscopes should be discuss as some angular rate sensing applications didn't selected MEMS based gyroscopes. Metal micromachining and low-g accelerometers are considered as a substitute technology. The report is describing the different applications and linked markets on a world basis (2005-2009), who is doing what, the expected product launch and also a complete and in-depth technology, specifications and marketing challenges. This detailed analysis is done per application so that readers can understand the key specifications and system challenges.
The report is bringing a lot of value both to MEMS manufacturers, suppliers to MEMS manufacturers and system manufacturers in order to understand the business potential, the technology status and who is doing what for strategic and marketing decision making
