Abstract
Research Overview
Development of Highly Multiplexed Technology Platforms for Detection of Infectious Diseases Poses a Stiff Challenge
One of the challenges in the future for the molecular diagnostics industry is to analyze symptoms that may be caused by several diseases at the same time, and have technologies that can detect all of them at the same time. This implies that systems in the future need to be highly multiplexed certainly for detection of infectious diseases and even more as one moves toward oncology applications. So the challenge will be to have the entire field of nucleic acid chemistry to be involved with highly multiplexed type of tests. Also, companies must continuously work to get faster and quicker results compared to several hours or days time frames usually involved in testing.
Need for Real-time, Fast and Cost-Effective Assays Driving the Growth
There is a continuing need for real-time, faster, more sensitive, less labour-intensive and hence more cost-effective molecular diagnostic solutions that can replace or complement traditional methods.
Lack of skilled technicians poses a barrier for Molecular Diagnostic Systems
One of the biggest restraints, despite an increase in the number of automated platforms, is the lack of skilled technicians, and the time required for sample preparation on non- or semiautomated systems. Even the advent of automated systems demands an understanding of relatively complex assays with different forms of detection systems requiring trained technicians to perform the molecular assays on these systems.
