Abstract

Advances in Microscopy Increase Success of Clinical Trials

Rapid technological advances in microscopy foster research on cellular processes and boost pharmaceutical development. These breakthroughs allow cost-effective high-content screening, which monitors live cells, thus reducing instances of clinical trial errors such as adsorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicology profiles (ADMET). High-content screening, the latest in the high-end microscopy arsenal, increases chances of drugs satisfying increasingly stringent regulatory safety standards. Cytological profiling is also progressively utilized in trials involving drugs with highly specific biochemical effects, such as kinase inhibitors. Further, progress in imaging technologies and labeling techniques in the life sciences sector enables charting of prominent events within living cells in real-time and in three dimensions (3D).

This Technical Insights study identifies and analyzes not only global emergent, but also novel applications of existing microscopy technologies. The research service also offers in-depth information on R&D and product development. It looks at market trends, drivers and restraints in addition to technical challenges. Case studies, divided into categories by company and university, are included to aid participants plan for the long term effectively.

Microscopy Vital Part of Composition Studies and Non-destructive Testing

As technology in the materials and electronics sector becomes increasingly complex and cutting edge, microscopy is being deployed as an integral part of the multi-billion dollar industry of composition studies and nondestructive testing. Microscopy or visual inspection is, currently, the primary evaluation method of a growing number of quality-control programs to appraise the condition and quality of a weld or component.

"The need for more sophisticated instrumentation will increase as companies develop advanced engineering, industrial, and electronic materials," observes the analyst of this research. "This is especially following recent surveys revealing over 20 percent market share by the world visual inspection equipment segment in the nondestructive test equipment market."

Consumer Demands Shape Dynamics of Microscopy Technology Development

Participants are offering product differentiation -- creating new products and enhancing existing ones -- to combat the growing threat of competition. The resulting boost to microscopy systems and technology also allows overcoming of long-standing challenges such as lens aberration. As conventional microscopy moves into the realm of digitalization, its applications are increasingly automated and integrated. This permits ease of use, encouraging customer preference for simple integrated microscopy systems which reduce end-user confusion.

"Developments in the electron and confocal microscopy along with laser scanning cytometry are impacting this imaging sector positively," elaborates the analyst. "Though not directly related, technology leap of quantum dots and its applications is also a driver for the development of microscopy field."
