Abstract

Healthy growth in the food industry - retail and, in particular, foodservice, has helped reinvigorate the market for commercial-use refrigerators, freezers and related equipment, a market that had been stagnated in the past 10 years. Commercial Refrigeration and Related Equipment in the U.S., a new report from Specialists in Business Information, contains comprehensive data on the U.S. market for commercial refrigerators and related equipment, including shipments, imports and exports, end-use markets, and industry statistics.

The segments for commercial refrigerator and related equipment are classified as:

  • Reach-in refrigerators and reach-in vertical display cabinets for normal and low temperature applications including self-contained and remote units;
  • Closed refrigerated display cases for normal and low temperature applications, including self-contained and remote units;
  • Open, one level and multilevel, self-service refrigerated display cases for normal temperature applications, including self-contained and remote units;
  • Open, self-service refrigerated frozen food display cases, including self-contained and remote units;
  • Closed refrigerated frozen food cabinets, other than reach-in type, including self-contained and remote units;
  • Other commercial refrigerated display cases for low temperature applications, including self-contained and remote units;
  • Other commercial refrigerators and related equipment;
  • Commercial refrigerated sectional coolers and cooling rooms, prefabricated (factory produced) type, including self-contained and remote units;
  • Commercial mechanical refrigerated drinking water coolers;
  • Commercial mechanical refrigerated bottled beverage coolers, dry and wet types, except coin-operated; and,
  • Commercial mechanical refrigerated bulk beverage dispensers, including malt dispensers and pre-cooler cabinets, except coin-operated.

Methodology

The information in the report was obtained from government sources, trade association publications, business journals, company literature, and investment reports. It also identifies key trends affecting the marketplace and profiles major marketers, along with manufacturer strategies used to maximize growth and profitability.

Shipment statistics are derived from the U.S. Census of Manufacturers and the Annual Survey of Manufacturers (ASM), and is estimated and forecasted by SBI. All 2005 shipments are estimates Import and Export data by major country of origin is derived from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission. Historical data are provided for 2001 through 2005, with forecast data from 2006 to 2010. Price trends were tracked from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index.

Market size (market supply) is defined as the amount of commercial refrigerators and related equipments products supplied to the total U.S. marketplace, in a particular period. Therefore, market size is determined by supply rather than demand. The U.S. commercial refrigerators and related equipments market supply (henceforth referred to as market size) was calculated from the Department of Commerce statistics by collecting data from domestic plant shipments, adding imports, and extracting exports. As such, the formula for determining the market size for commercial refrigerators and related equipments will be: production in U.S. + balance of trade i.e. Shipments + (imports - exports). Also note that the values are in net selling values, i.e., free on board (f.o.b.) from the manufacturing plant, and not the retail/wholesale price sold to the end consumer.

SBI designates the overall commercial refrigerators and related equipments product business as the market, the various product areas within the market as segments.
