Abstract
For the past two years, the camera phone market has been the main driver for CMOS Image Sensors.
The camera phone market will continue to propel CMOS Image Sensors, as the market grows to over 400
million units in 2005. This is good news, as the penetration of CMOS Image Sensors into the Digital
Still Camera market still hasnt met the expectations of industry insiders and analysts alike.
Growth in the Digital Still Camera market is slowing as well, with our projection of only 12.8%
growth in 2005, following several years of growth in excess of 50%.
All of these challenges have led a number of players to merge, sell off, or exit the market
entirely. In the last report, we talked about the exit of National Semiconductor and Zoran. Most
recently, Philips has announced its exit from the market, and IC Media has been acquired by
MagnaChip Semiconductor, a Korean company.
In the first quarter of 2005 we have seen some stabilization of pricing for CMOS Image Sensors.
VGA sensors have continued to show a strong decline. However, the higher megapixel sensors that are
displacing the VGA sensors are leveling out. That doesnt mean that prices wont continue to decline
at each density -- that is the nature of this market. However, the maturation of the market and the
consolidation of competitors, combined with the continuing megapixel progression should lead to a
solid year in 2005.
This report is a critical resource for CMOS image sensor manufacturers and customers. The data
and analysis contained in this report delivers the most comprehensive and current global pricing
data as well as vital insights into future pricing trends based on survey results from suppliers and
customers in the market.ゥ2005 S2 Data Corp. All Rights Reserved CMOS Image Sensor and Module
