With the incidence of cardiac disease on a constant growth curve, a test modality that can provide specific, inexpensive screening tools for cardiovascular disease (CVD) before the onset of symptoms, is like the proverbial "license to print money," and a large menu of tests have been developed, including serum lipids, hypercoagulation factors, enzyme and protein markers, genetic makeup, and even tests for certain viral infections.
