Abstract
The market for semiconductors in backlighting applications has grown strongly
in 2005 and 2006 and is forecast to reach around $4.5 billion in 2012. The
market is dominated by visible LED lamps and the trends within this market are
driving the market growth of both LED Driver ICs and ambient light sensors. As
LED backlighting is more widely adopted, strong growth is forecast for new
applications such as LCD TVs and PC notebooks.
The ambient light sensor market is forecast to show very strong revenue growth
over the next 5 years, as they are adopted by manufacturers, for automatically
adjusting backlight brightness to suit the surrounding light conditions. This
results in lower power consumption, which extends battery life. Market growth
is thus being driven primarily by the cellular terminal and PC notebook
markets.
As LED backlighting technology continues to become more price competitive with
CCFL backlighting, it is forecast to be further adopted in medium and large
sized displays. This will have an impact on the CCFL backlighting market.
However, advances in CCFL technology and innovations such as hybrid
backlighting units which use both LED and CCFL technology, are expected to
develop the CCFL backlighting market further.
