Abstract
Key Conclusions:
After rapid projection system growth in 4 and 5, the report finds that there
is sufficient capacity to produce UHP-type lamps now and in the foreseeable
future, with main growth engines coming from professional projection and lamp
replacement markets. This should create stable demand, but with declining
prices. Nevertheless, changes are coming rapidly.
As a result of rapid growth of flat panel TVs, we have reduced our forecast
for microdisplay-based RPTVs, resulting in lower demand for new and
replacement lamps. In addition, new illumination sources like LED and lasers
are entering the market in 6. Our forecast shows top-level penetration of
these sources into the market for projection systems. Insight Media will be
releasing the companion 6 Laser Projection Report and 6 LED Projection Report
mid-February.
In addition, there are new categories for projectors that could emerge to
drive sales, such as low cost projection systems. Such new categories could
represent opportunities for LED, laser and other HID illumination sources.
The Need:
Virtually all microdisplay-based projection systems built to date have used a
lamp such as the UHP or other ultra-high pressure mercury lamp as a light
source. In order to make the correct decisions related to the design,
manufacturing, or marketing of projectors, it is necessary to have complete
information on the vendors, prices, availability and technology for these
lamps. For lamp manufacturers to properly plan capacity for these types of
lamps, forecasts of lamp usage by projection system manufacturers and lamp
usage in the replacement market is needed. It is also necessary for both lamp
and projector manufacturers to understand future trends of projection systems,
ultra-high pressure mercury lamps and other light sources that may replace
ultra-high pressure mercury lamps in the future.
The replacement lamp market will become an increasingly important part of the
lamp market in the future as the installed base of projectors increases. It is
necessary for lamp makers, OEM projector manufacturers and companies that sell
replacement lamps to understand this market in order to properly plan for the
need for replacement lamps.
