Abstract
Abstract
This IDC study presents an analysis of the IT spending and opportunities in
the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ online gaming market. It is based
on IDC' s prominent research on leading online gaming SPs' behavior regarding
IT adoption and presents a consolidated IT infrastructure deployment analysis
of the APEJ region' s leading online gaming SPs in their respective countries
and subregions.
"The APEJ online gaming industry remains unaffected by the U.S. economic
slowdown. IT spending on gaming-related infrastructures reached US$ 255.8
million in 2007," says Ang Poon Wei, market analyst, Software Research, IDC
Asia/Pacific. "As developers are currently looking into multiplatform
development, online gaming SPs should plan their IT spending around it."
Methodology
The data, analyses, and conclusions in this study were created from IDC' s
extensive primary and secondary research resources, combined with the
expertise of multiple analysts representing a variety of areas related to IT
spending and IT infrastructure deployment of online gaming SPs.
This study was conducted in order to understand the IT spending and IT
infrastructure deployment behavior of selected online gaming SPs in 2007 as
well as their expectations for 2008.
Extensive primary research was conducted in the form of interviews with CIOs,
IT managers, or IT administrators of online gaming SPs.
Data Collection
IDC' s research team within different country offices and at the regional
headquarters gathered the data used in this study. The objective was to
collate the research into four primary areas:
- Local expertise. Relying on local industry analysts for primary research
ensures that results are based on a broad knowledge base concerning local
products, vendors, users, and industry trends.
- Online gaming SP analysis. As individual IDC country offices regularly
conduct extensive interviews with local online gaming SPs and local
representatives of multinational online gaming SPs, the data obtained can be
compared with
- information gathered at IDC headquarters and regional research centers.
- IT vendor and telecommunications SP analysis. Data from interviews and
surveys that are conducted by IDC offices with local and multinational IT
vendors and telcos are mapped into the analysis of online gaming SPs as
validation for
- market projections.
- Inductive analysis. IDC' s historical global market coverage and analysis
of individual components of the worldwide IT marketplace puts the company in
an unparalleled position to assess each country' s report in the context of the
overall dimensions and composition of the industry. This research component
provides an overall check against data collected based on local expertise as
well as vendor and user analysis.
Situation Overview
IDC estimates that in 2007, the APEJ online gaming market experienced a YOY
increase of 47.6%, generating total revenue of US$2.8 billion. Online gaming
SPs have been increasing the number of games as well as adopting different
business models to cater to various gamers throughout 2007.
On top of other IDC studies on the business opportunities and market dynamics
present in the online gaming industry, this study focuses on the industry' s IT
spending trends across the APEJ market to present an in-depth quantitative
view of the industry' s IT spending.
