Abstract
This IDC update considers the 2007 disk and tape storage market dynamics in the overall Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ region and its 13 country markets (Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the People' s Republic of China [PRC], Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam).
In particular, this update seeks to explore the relationship between disk and tape storage. Are disk and tape storage competing technologies or do both cater to a discrete set of functions? IDC postulates that both disk and tape storage technologies have their respective virtues, and are often deployed at varying degrees for data backup, protection, archiving, and disaster recovery solutions. Both have niche functions and rarely will either supersede and replace the other in terms of functionality. This is especially the case in APEJ. Furthermore, the introduction of virtual tape libraries and removable hard disk drives (RHDDs) are blurring the lines of distinction between disk and tape solutions. Therefore, in an effort to bring visibility to the strategic choices that are being made, IDC leverages its breadth of coverage of the APEJ storage market from a combined disk and branded tape storage perspective.
