Abstract
This IDC study presents IDC' s WiMAX Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment capex forecasts and subscriber forecasts for the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ region from 2008 to 2012. Analysis of the current regulatory situation and commercial or trial deployments in 13 countries is provided - Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, China, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
"The year 2008 will mark the coming of age for WiMAX as various early trials and commercial deployments are implemented. If the performance results in the field can verify the theory, then 2009-2012 will be a period of aggressive ramping up of WiMAX fixed/nomadic and some higher-mobility services," says Bill Rojas, research director, Communications Research, IDC Asia/Pacific. He further adds, "The pent up demand for low-cost {customer premises equipment [CPE] plus network capex US$/subscriber cost) broadband wireless services is huge in developing markets in APEJ including India, the Philippines, Pakistan, China, and Vietnam, where copper-based xDSL has limited potential beyond what has already been installed through year-end 2007."
