Abstract
This IDC study presents IDC' s most recent forecast of the U.S. broadband services market, identifies and quantifies the market opportunity within the United States, and presents recommended strategies for broadband service providers to take advantage of these opportunities. The analysis in this study includes the following:
- A discussion of recent trends in the U.S. broadband services market
- Forecasts of U.S. broadband services subscriptions and revenue by technology, including DSL, cable modem, metro Ethernet Internet access (MEIA), and other broadband technologies, from 2008 through 2012
- Market characteristics and guidance for existing broadband service providers and new entrants to leverage the growth opportunities in the coming five-year period
"The U.S. broadband market is still experiencing growth in subscribers, although new subscriber additions slowed dramatically in 2007. However, IDC estimates that subscriber growth will be flat but steady throughout the forecast period, with more than 35 million new broadband subscriptions added by 2012. The desire for a faster connection to the Internet will continue to drive many new customers to adopt broadband services, yet it is the advent of user-generated content and bandwidth-intensive applications that will drive the majority of new subscriber growth through 2012." - Amy Harris Lind, manager, Consumer Broadband Markets
