Abstract
This IDC study presents results from IDC' s 2007 Narrowband to Broadband Migration Survey. Included in this study are results pertaining to the dial-up services market in the United States. Specific topics include respondents' current service subscription, their reasons for choosing their ISP, and whether they had switched providers previously, as well as their intent to migrate from dial-up to broadband and their subscription and usage of applications such as online gaming, Web-based storage, and computer security. Results for each question are presented in tables and figures for all respondents with dial-up access at home.
"Much of the growth in new broadband subscribers has been driven by narrowband households migrating to faster broadband services," says Amy Harris Lind, program manager in IDC' s Consumer Markets program. "However, as the pool of dial-up subscribers dwindles, broadband service providers need to redouble their efforts to attract dial-up users to their broadband packages. Clearly, dial-up users are thinking about migrating to broadband as the survey results show that nearly one-third of respondents indicated a willingness to migrate to broadband in the next year. However, the survey also shows that broadband providers must lower the price of broadband access, make it more readily available, and improve customer service if they are to successfully convince dial-up users to cross the chasm and migrate to broadband."
