Abstract

This major strategic analysis provides a detailed insight into the current and future market for controlled-release drug delivery technology.

Providing...

Critical analyses and competitive ratings for major specialist developers Unique sales forecasts to 2015 for key current and new products utilising controlled-release drug delivery technologies A comprehensive examination of this major drug delivery sector

The controlled-release market is estimated to be worth over US$17 billion globally in 2007. Delivery specialists estimate that oral-dosage controlled-release delivery systems contribute the majority of sales around 90% and demonstrated +2% year-on-year growth.

By 2015, the report forecasts that controlled-release products in development from 22 key companies could generate additional sales of over US$11.7 billion. These products utilise a range of delivery platforms including diffusion, degradation and activated controlled-release systems. The world is likely to become a smarter place as site specific controlled-release technologies become a reality.

Opportunities now...

While the growth of controlled-release technology continues to be fuelled by line extensions helping to offset the impact of generic erosion this market is far from being exhausted. Many pharmaceutical companies have yet to make the additional investment to develop a controlled-release version of a product while the immediate-release version is under patent protection. Therefore, considerable market opportunities still exist in the development and application for precise, controlled-delivery products for both approved and new pharmaceuticals.

...and in the future

Controlled-release technologies are increasingly being applied in the preclinical development of products, leading to the parallel development of immediate-release and controlled-release formulations to maximise market exposure. Controlled-release formulations may potentially provide for greater effectiveness in the treatment of chronic conditions through more predictable kinetics; reduced side effects by minimising peak plasma concentrations; greater convenience and higher levels of patient compliance due to a simplified dosage schedule.

Answers to key questions

  • What impact will companies such as Durect, OctoPlus, Penwest and Protherics have on the future competitive landscape?
  • Can market leaders in controlled-release such as ALZA and Elan maintain their status in the face of growing competition?
  • What are the relative strengths and weaknesses of the research pipeline?
  • What strategies are proving most productive and for which companies?
  • What will the product/company landscape look like in 2015?
