Abstract
Daiichi Sankyo's core strategy is to become a Japanese "Global Pharma Innovator". This report provides a full review of the company's activities together with sales forecasts for key products to 2010.
For the nine months ended 31st December 2005, Daiichi Sankyo's net sales were ¥704,039 million. Operating income was ¥134,294 million and net income was ¥80,992 million. Research and development expenditure was ¥113,371 million and pharmaceutical sales were ¥606,349 million.
Key products
Daiichi Sankyo intends to maximise the value of its existing leading products, beyond what could have been achieved by the companies separately. For example:
- Daiichi Sankyo is undertaking life-cycle management of the antihypertensive, Olmetec/Benicar, which is one of the companies main growth drivers. Since its introduction in a number of markets, sales and market share are increasing.
- The future growth of the anti-infective Cravit is expected to be strong due to life-cycle management efforts.
- In fiscal 2005, sales of the antihypertensive, Calblock, increased by 400%, to reach ¥3,000 million and are forecast to exceed ¥10 billion in Japan.
Overseas pharmaceutical sales were negatively affected by the expiration of the patent in certain European countries for pravastatin and increasing competition faced by that product in the US, which weakened sales of bulk pravastatin. However, sales of olmesartan and levofloxacin were strong.
