Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is currently approved only to treat Parkinson's disease and Parkinson-like symptoms; however, clinical trials are under way for DBS in several other neurological and psychiatric disorders. As these surgical interventions gain acceptance in the face of conventional therapies' shortcomings in severely affected patients, opportunities are emerging for such devices, used both alone and in conjunction with existing drug regimens.
