Abstract
Digital visual interface (DVI) and sister technology high definition
multimedia interface (HDMI) are both successful high-bandwidth digital
interface specifications. DVI is aimed primarily at PCs and PC peripherals,
while HDMI is aimed at the consumer electronics (CE) market. While DVI-enabled
shipments reached a record number in 2005, those shipments are expected to
decline after 2006 due to the entry of the next-generation DisplayPort
standard.
HDMI will have continued success in the CE segment. It has parlayed its
success in digital televisions (DTV) to devices that connect to DTVs,
including set top boxes, DVD players and recorders, and game consoles. HDMI
appeared for the first time in digital camcorders and digital still cameras in
2006.
Wireless will enter this market in 2007. A number of companies have announced
the ability to transmit HDMI signals wirelessly via Ultrawideband chip
technology. In addition, a group of major CE vendors have announced a new very
high bandwidth wireless standard called WirelessHD.
This report contains analysis and five-year annual forecasts for the
penetration of DVI and HDMI into 20 different applications in PCs, PC
peripherals, and CE. Five-year average selling price forecasts for discrete
DVI and HDMI transmitters and receivers are provided. Past history of
penetration forecasts back to 2004 is also included, in addition to brief
profiles of major DVI and HDMI silicon suppliers.
